- Essential oils are very concentrated. For example, it takes about 220 pounds of lavender flowers to make 1 pound of essential oil.
- The term, "aromatherapy" was coined in the 1920s by Rene Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist and perfumer. The story goes that Gattefosse accidentally burned his hand on reflex immersed his burns in the closest liquid, which happened to be lavender oil. The lavender healed his hand without leaving a scar, prompting him to begin researching the therapeutic benefits of essential oils.
- Smell is a potent memory trigger. The olfactory nerve is located very close to the amygdala and hippocampus, area of the brain associated with emotion and emotional memory.
